Report

Organised by Nuclear Division, supported by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Hong Kong Branch and Hong Kong Association of Risk Management & Safety (HKARMS), the captioned one-day visit was held on 11 January 2020 with the participation of 29 members.

Nuclear power from Daya Bay makes up of 25% of the electricity consumed in Hong Kong and plays a pivotal role in its transition to a low carbon future as per its  Climate Action Plan 2030+. The base consists of three nuclear power stations, namely the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station (GNPS) commissioned in 1994, the Lingao Nuclear Power Station (LNPS) Phase 1 and Phase 2 which was fully commissioned in 2003 and 2010 respectively, and has been safely supplying clean and reliable electricity.

Upon arrival, Ir Prof Vincent Ho, the chairman of Nuclear Division, welcomed the participants and briefly introduced nuclear safety. Led by Ir James Lam, the technical manager of Hong Kong Nuclear Investment Company, the visit started with a presentation on the nuclear power principle and the safe operation of Daya Bay. The participants then enjoyed a tour to the exhibition hall installed with scaled reactor models and a full-scale replica of a fuel assembly.

The highlight of the visit was the training facility for fuel handling where reactor fuel is transferred under water, which cools hot spent fuel and shields its radioactivity. In the full simulator rooms for GNPS and LNPS Phase 2, participants were amazed by continual training requirements and high professional standards of a reactor operator. At the end of the tour, a grand overview of GNPS was provided on the Daya Bay viewing platform.

There were many discussions throughout the visit about the operational safety, the management of nuclear waste and major workflow in case of a nuclear emergency. It is not only an informative visit but also an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of nuclear power generation and its development. The Nuclear Division would like to thank HKNIC and Daya Bay for their hospitality.
