Technical Seminar:

What Does a Medical Physicist Do?

Date & Time

4 November 2023 (Saturday); 10:00 am - 11:50 am

Venue
Room B5-310, Yeung Kin Man Academic Building, City University of Hong Kong

Organised by
The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers – Nuclear Division

Deadline of Application
2 November 2023 (Thursday)

Programme Highlights

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), medical physics is the application of physics to medicine. It uses physics concepts and procedures in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. As part of a team of healthcare professionals, medical physicists play a significant role in assuring the safe and effective use of radiation in medicine.

The presentation aims at giving an overview of the responsibilities for medical physicists in various sub-specialties including radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine, health physics and engineering physics. The knowledge, skills, competencies and examination process for the certification scheme of individual medical physicists in Hong Kong will also be introduced.

The presentation will be delivered by Dr. Francis Lee, the president of Hong Kong Association of Medical Physics.

Registration and Enquiry

The event is free of charge. Registration is required. The number of participants is limited to 40. Applications will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Report

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), medical physics is the application of physics to medicine. It involves the use of radiation, imaging technologies, and other physics-related methodologies in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. As a group of healthcare professionals, medical physicists play an important role to ensure the safe and effective use of radiation in medical processes.

A technical seminar was organized on 4 November 2023 by the Nuclear Division to give an overview of the responsibilities of medical physicists in various sub-specialties as well as the competencies and the examination process for the certification scheme in Hong Kong. Around 40 participants joined this seminar presented by Dr. Francis Lee, the president of Hong Kong Association of Medical Physics.

Dr. Lee firstly introduced the responsibilities of the medical physicists in the four major sub-specialties, namely radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine, health physics and engineering physics. The different sub-specialties play the vital role in the application of technology and healthcare planning, from equipment commissioning to specific treatment plan for the patient. He also provided an overview of the distribution of the medical physicists in local hospital and medical institutes. He then introduced the essentials and the requirements to become a certified medical physicist including the education requirements, trainings, examinations and assessments. Candidates possessing a master’s or PhD degree in physics, medical physics or related engineering can be recruited as resident physicists by local hospitals. They will then undergo a two-years robust training program before proceeding to professional examination. After passing the examination, a two-year specialized training and subsequent assessment by a professional evaluation panel is required to ensure the competence of the individual before certificating as a medical physicist in one of the major sub-specialties.

On behalf of the Nuclear Division, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to Prof Francis Lee for providing this fruitful sharing for our members.

Ir Prof. Ken Cheung, Deputy Chairman of the Nuclear Division, presented a souvenir to Dr. Francis Lee.
