Report

A group of 22 visitors of the Nuclear Division visited the Nuclear Reactor Simulation Laboratory in the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 16 March 2019.

The group was warmly welcomed by Ir Dr B L Luk of the CityU. He began with a brief introduction of the operational principles of nuclear power plant, nuclear power development in China, the training criteria of nuclear plant operators, the medical applications of nuclear technology, as well as the career opportunities for nuclear engineering graduates in Hong Kong.

He further introduced the operation of the Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR), the in-house Generic PWR Reactor Simulator and simulation software on severe nuclear accidents and the associated atmospheric radiological dispersion. Ir Dr Luk then simulated the behaviour of the PWR in various accident scenarios, which includes a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) and the loss of all on-site and off-site AC power with the use of the Modular Accident Analysis Program (MAAP), with an explanation of the development of some key plant parameters and their significance throughout these accidents. The simulator serves as a useful tool for both research and educational purposes in the university. Finally, the environmental effects on Hong Kong during a nuclear plant accident was demonstrated. With the integral use of the simulator and the software, the information on plant operating conditions, the possible outcome on plant safety and integrity, the consequential radiological dispersion particularly in severe plant events and its effect on the environment under various circumstances could be demonstrated.

On behalf of the Nuclear Division, we would like to express sincere thanks to Ir Dr Luk for providing an inspiring demonstration and visit with insights into the capability of nuclear simulators in the modern world.
