Technical Seminar:
“Beginning, Development,
Innovation and Outlook of China General Nuclear in the four decades since the
Open Door Policy”
“改革开放四十年中广核的起步、发展、创新与展望”
Programme
Highlights
China General Nuclear is a
leading nuclear power enterprise in China.
It developed in conjunction with the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station and
has flourished with the expanding nuclear power programme of China, engaging in
nuclear power generation as well as nuclear fuel supply and nuclear power plant
design and development. The speaker will
provide an account of development at China General Nuclear, and an outlook of
its future direction.
The seminar will be conducted in
Putonghua with power point in Simplified Chinese.
Speaker
Mr LU Changshen is a senior
engineer at research level and has served China General Nuclear for over 30
years, taking up numerous senior managerial and directorate positions at the
holding company and its major subsidiaries.

ReportThe Nuclear Division organized a seminar on “Beginning, Development,
Innovation and Outlook of China General Nuclear in the four decades since the
Open Door Policy” on 5 December 2018. The
seminar was delivered by Mr Lu Changshen with over 50 attendants.
Mr Lu has held various top managerial positions and presently serves
as a director of China General Nuclear (CGN), its installed nuclear capacity ranking
first in China and third in the world. He
reported that CGN began after the formation of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power
Station that was conceived in 1978 and flourished with the Chinese Open Door
Policy. Further expansion at the Daya
Bay site enables it to supply 8% of the electricity for Guangdong and 23% for
Hong Kong. Operational excellence at
Daya Bay has led to high power output, environmental benefits and peer
recognition, as well as initiated the nuclear power programme at CGN, which
presently has 22GW of installed nuclear generating capacity and a similar quantity
in renewable energy, with worldwide business in uranium mining, nuclear fuel supply,
nuclear power research and development (R&D), and reactor design and
construction.
In particular, CGN has developed its own reactor design that
originated at Daya Bay, accompanied by co-operation with national and
international institutions, extensive localized manufacture and indigenous
R&D facilities that have developed nuclear fuel, digital control, robotics
and small reactors. A notable product is
Hualong-1 which is an advanced reactor design under construction that meets the
latest international specifications and is undergoing rigorous regulatory
approval for construction in the UK.
Mr Lu observed that with growing electricity demand and the need to reduce
air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, there are ample opportunities for
non-carbon emitting energies including nuclear in China.
The Division gratefully acknowledged Mr Lu for providing a
comprehensive insight in the development of a world scale nuclear enterprise and
generating much interest among the audience.
