Programme Highlights

China has the largest nuclear power plant construction programme in the world. Its development of nuclear power is entering a new stage with the first batch of Generation III+ nuclear power plants due for commissioning in the coming years. In particular, the indigenous Hualong One reactor (HPR1000) of Generation III+ PWR design is being actively promoted as a key contribution to the “Belt and Road Initiatives. The speaker will present the development of nuclear power in Mainland China and the opportunities of “Belt and Road Initiatives” for the Hualong One reactor.

The seminar will be conducted in Putonghua with power point in Simplified Chinese.

Speaker

Mr. Zhao Bo is a Deputy Chief Engineer of China Nuclear Power Engineering Company & an expert of China Nuclear Energy Association. He has a wealth of experience in nuclear power plant design and safety assessment.

Registration & Enquiries

This seminar is free of charge and prior registration is required. The number of participants is limited to 60 and seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis with priority given to the members of Nuclear Division. Report

Technical Seminar on “China nuclear power technology development and Belt and Road initiatives opportunities”

Prepared by Ir James Lam

A technical seminar was organized by the Nuclear Division on “China nuclear power technology development and Belt and Road initiatives opportunities” on 4 May 2018, for over 40 participants by Mr. Zhao Bo, Deputy Chief Engineer of China Nuclear Power Engineering Company and an expert of China Nuclear Energy Association.

Mr. Zhao opened by a song introducing the transition from Generation II/II+ nuclear power technology to the new era of Generation III/III+ nuclear power technology in Mainland China.  He presented an overview of nuclear power development in China, and the current plan for 58 GW in operation and 30 GW in construction by 2020 for contributing to the target CO2 emissions reduction per unit GDP by 60-65% from the 2005 level by 2030 for the Paris Agreement.

Lessons from historical accidents point to the need for advanced nuclear technology.  Mr. Zhao highlighted the advanced features of Generation III nuclear power technologies adopted in China, particularly the passive safety features of AP1000, the four redundant safety trains of EPR and the indigenous passive cum active safety design of Hualong One, as well as updating the construction of PRC’s Generation III nuclear power plants and emerging technologies.

Apart from China, in the “Belt and Road Initiative” zone, there are 19 countries and regions in the “Belt and Road Initiatives” having nuclear power and 20 having nuclear plans, with 240 reactor units planned for development by 2030 and an investment of thousand billion USD, offering a bright future for mutual co-operation.  China has currently focused on the development of Karachi K2 and K3 projects in Pakistan (Hualong One), and promoted the completion of the Generic Design Assessment of Hualong One in the UK, and sought further project breakthroughs in numerous countries.

On behalf of the Nuclear Division, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Zhao for providing this illuminating seminar to our members.
