Visit to Nuclear Reactor Simulation Laboratory and CLP Power Low Carbon Energy Education Centre at CityU

Date, Time & Venue

25 November 2017 (Saturday); 10:00 am; assemble outside Room 3202, 3/F, Lau Ming Wai Academic Building (Academic 3 Building), City University of Hong Kong, Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon.

Programme Highlights

In the Nuclear Simulator Laboratory, the operating features of a full scope nuclear reactor simulator and the MAAP severe accident simulation software will be demonstrated.  In the newly commissioned low carbon energy education centre, 3-D immersive display of the core parts of the nuclear island of Daya Bay/Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plant will be shown, and information on various low carbon energies, such as wind and solar energy, will be displayed and explained. In addition, a model of China’s latest generation 3 nuclear reactor, Hualong 1, will be exhibited.

Registration and Enquiry

The seminar is free of charge and prior registration is required.  The number of participants will be limited to 40 and applicants will be served on a first-come-first-serve basis. Priority will be given to the members of Nuclear Division. For registration, please complete and return the Standard Reply Form to Ir Barry LEE via Email: nuclear@ne.hkie.org.hk. Successful applicants will be notified by email. For enquiries, please contact Ir Barry Lee at Tel: 3155 3950.

Report

Technical Visit to the Nuclear Reactor Simulation Laboratory and CLP Power Low Carbon Energy Education Centre at the City University of Hong Kong

Prepared by Ir Richard FUNG

A group of 22 visitors of the Nuclear Division, led by its Chairman Ir Dr Vincent Fong, paid a visit to the Nuclear Reactor Simulation Laboratory and CLP Power Low Carbon Energy Education Centre (CLP Power LCEEC) of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 25 November 2017.

The group was well received by Ir Dr B L Luk of CityU.  He began with an introduction of topics from nuclear power development in China, and the medical applications of nuclear technology to the careers for nuclear graduates in Hong Kong.  He further introduced the operation of Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) and the in-house Generic PWR Reactor Simulator and its simulation software on severe nuclear accidents and atmospheric radiological dispersion.  He then simulated PWR plant behaviour in the loss of coolant flow and during reactor coolant pipe break accidents, explaining the evolution of plant parameters and their significance.  The simulator is a useful educational and research tool at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels for the university.

The group also visited the CLP Power LCEEC.  The centre has several themes of low carbon energy, to include wind, hydro, solar, gas and nuclear, supported by a large number of physical models and interactive software displays.  Key features of each energy are highlighted and explained.  Further information was provided in nuclear safety and radiation.  Among the displays, there was a 3D immersive display that gave the visitors a virtual tour inside the PWR reactor building, and a large scale physical model of Hualong 1, a PWR equipped with the latest safety technology that has been developed in China.

Nuclear Division expressed thanks to Ir Dr Luk for providing an enlightening visit and demonstration, together with an insight into the capability of the simulator and software and the merits and characteristics of each low carbon energy source.
