Technical
Visit to Daya Bay Nuclear Power Base in Shenzhen
Prepared
By Ir Richard FUNG
The Nuclear Division organized a
one-day technical visit to Daya Bay Nuclear Power Base on 4 November 2017 with 34
participants.
The Daya Bay site consists of three
nuclear power stations, the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station (GNPS),
the Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station (LNPS) and the Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station
Phase 2 (LNPS 2) which were fully commissioned in 1994, 2003 and 2010
respectively. The Daya Bay site currently
has the largest operating nuclear capacity in China, with its six Pressurised
Water Reactor (PWR) nuclear generating units having a total installed capacity
of 6,108 MW gross and representing about a sixth of the national nuclear power
capacity. 80% of the output of GNPS is
delivered to Hong Kong to meet about 25% of its electricity consumption.
During the visit, participants were
provided with a video and a technical presentation on nuclear power and safety considerations
at the Daya Bay site to cover topics including site selection, engineering
design, plant operation, regulation and emergency management, and tours of the
exhibition centre which is fitted with many electronic displays but included a 1/10
scaled model of the reactor and the nuclear steam supply system of GNPS, a full
scale replica of a fuel assembly and a 1/100 scaled model of the third
generation Hualong 1 nuclear power plant that is now undergoing the Generic
Design Assessment, as a regulatory licensing process in the UK, of the full
scope simulators of GNPS and LNPS 2 with the latter one installed with digital
control technology, of the full scale fuel handling training facility and of the
viewing platforms of GNPS and LNPS.
The participants expressed much
interest in nuclear operation at Daya Bay and there were many discussions
during the visit. The visit offered a
useful opportunity to address the interest and further the understanding of the
participants in nuclear power in China as well as in Daya Bay.
