Technical Visit to

E&M InnoZone and Interactive Learning Centre at

EMSD Headquarters

Date,  Time & Venue

21 December 2019 (Saturday); 9:30 am - 11:00 am; assemble in front of main entrance, EMSD Headquarters, 3 Kai Shing Street, Kowloon

Deadline of application

Programme Highlights

The visit will cover a tour of the E&M InnoZone and Interactive Learning Centre (ILC) at 4/F of EMSD Headquarters. The E&M InnoZone features more than ten innovation and technology (I&T) projects under the collaboration of the EMSD, academic and research institutions as well as start-ups to promote R&D and drive forward the developments in innovative E&M technology and applications.

The ILC applies advanced I&T technologies such as holographic images and 3D mapping training facility for digitalization training on major E&M assets. Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) and virtual reality (VR) systems are also used to assist trainee's learning of E&M installations in areas that are not easily accessible or restricted, which enable them to experience and get familiarized with the relevant maintenance procedure and safety precautionary measures.

Registration and Enquiry

The visit is free of charge and prior registration is required. The number of participants is limited to 20 and applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Priority will be given to members of Nuclear Division. For registration, please submit online application via the following link:  https://forms.gle/d8JscCtTTSUwhQps9 . Successful members will be notified by email. For enquiries, please contact Ir Daniel FONG at nuclear@ne.hkie.org.hk . Report

A visit to InnoZone and Interactive Learning Centre at EMSD organized by HKIE Nuclear Division was successfully held on 21 December 2019 with 15 participants led by Chairman Ir Vincent HO.

Ir Thomas KWOK of EMSD received the participants at the EMSD Headquarters Building and started the visit with a video introduction followed by a holographic image presentation by a virtual assistant at Interactive Learning Centre (ILC).  The participants were also guided to view the various electrical and mechanical (E&M) facilities and building services installations in different government buildings by augmented reality (AR) setups there.

Ir KWOK then led the participants to the E&M InnoZone adjacent to ILC.  He briefed the participants that EMSD launched E&M InnoPortal as a platform for I&T collaboration and maintained a list of the technology development needs of various government departments and the E&M trade, with a view to facilitating universities and start-ups to provide E&M related innovation and technology to match the technology development needs identified in InnoPortal.  He informed that the E&M InnoZone featured more than ten innovation and technology (I&T) projects under the collaboration of the EMSD, academic and research institutions as well as start-ups to promote R&D and drive forward the developments in innovative E&M technology and applications. He elaborated further the increasing use of building information modeling (BIM) in new buildings and showcased the benefits of BIM- Asset Management (BIM-AM) systems. The participants were guided to step into Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) zone to experience the simulation training exercise of “addressing an emergency incident of medical oxygen leakage in hospital” by virtual reality (VR) setups there. He shared his experience and led the participants to visit other trial projects in InnoZone including wireless signal transmission via manhole covers in sewage systems and various energy saving/ building automation systems.

Afterwards, the participants returned to ILC and were given to experience VR simulations individually.  The event ended with a Q&A session and we enjoyed an innovative visit comprising AR and VR images.
