Seminar on Fundamentals of Nuclear Power Generation and its application at Daya Bay

Date, Time & Venue

12 January 2018 (Friday); 6:30pm; James Chiu & Dragages Rooms, the HKIE Headquarters, 9/F Island Beverley, No 1 Great George Street, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.

Programme Highlights

Global warming is considered as one of the major threats affecting the survival of all living organism on Earth.  In November 2015, all countries agreed to limit global temperature increase well below 2 degrees Celsius, while urging efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees under the COP 21.  Paris Agreement is the direction to combat against global warming, various initiatives are adopted worldwide to overcome this challenge.  Use of clean energy is one of the major initiatives promoted by different countries and nuclear energy has a major role to play in achieving the mission.  As of 2014, around 11% of the electricity produced worldwide came from nuclear which established a substantial position in the world energy portfolio.   This seminar aims to share with members on the theory of nuclear energy generation, the safety consideration, and the application and experience at Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station.

Speaker

Ir Chi-sing LEE, who is currently the first Deputy General Manager of Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, an experienced and professional expert in the field of nuclear power operations and management.

Registration and Enquiry

The seminar is free of charge and prior registration is required.  The number of participants will be limited to 80 and applicants will be served on a first-come-first-serve basis. Report

Seminar on "Fundamentals of Nuclear Power Generation and its application at Daya Bay”

Prepared by lr Ken C N CHEUNG and Ms Annie W C KOU

A technical seminar was organized by the Nuclear Division on the “Fundamentals of Nuclear Power Generation and its application at Daya Bay” on 12 January 2017 at the HKIE Headquarters. The seminar was presented to over 70 participants by Ir LEE Chi-sing, First Deputy General Manager of Daya Bay Nuclear Power Operations and Management Co., Ltd (DNMC).

Ir LEE began with an overview of nuclear power generation around the world. Beginning from the Generation I reactor designs in the 1950’s and Generation II & II plus in 1970’s and 90’s, the Generation III reactors currently being built are deployed with further design refinements and safety feature enhancements. The Generation III are characterized with standardized design to expedite licensing, reducing capital cost and construction time. Also, the streamlined designs make them easier to operate and less vulnerable to operational interruptions as well as expected operational life of 60 years. Their safety features reduce the risk of reactor core damage and hence the environmental impacts.

Nuclear power provides safe, reliable, clean and competitive power meeting 11% of the World’s electricity requirement. Except in a few jurisdictions, many countries have continued to develop nuclear energy in their energy portfolio. Continuous nuclear power development is also found in Mainland China with the national plan to have 58GW in operation and 30GW in construction by 2020.

The Daya Bay site has three nuclear power stations, the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station (GNPS), the Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station and the Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station Phase 2 which were fully commissioned in 1994, 2003 and 2011 respectively.  Among them, the GNPS is the first large-scale commercial nuclear power facility in the Mainland and supplies 25% of the Hong Kong electricity demand. Safety considerations at the Daya Bay site including site selection, engineering design, plant operation, regulation and emergency management were discussed in the seminar.
