Report

Prepared By Ir Richard Fung

As their joint activities, the Nuclear Division held two one-day technical visits with the Hong Kong Association of Medical Physics to Daya Bay Nuclear Power Base on 15 and 29 October 2016 with over 60 participants from the two organizations.

The Daya Bay site consists of three nuclear power stations, the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station (GNPS) commissioned in 1994, the Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station (LNPS) commissioned in 2003 and the Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station Phase 2 (LNPS 2) commissioned in 2010.  The site has the first commercial scale nuclear power station in Mainland China, and currently has the largest operating nuclear capacity in China, with its six Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) nuclear generating units having a total installed capacity of 6,108 MW gross and representing close to a fifth of the national nuclear power capacity.  70% of the output of GNPS is delivered to Hong Kong together with another 10% for 5 years starting 2014, to meet about 25% of the electricity need of Hong Kong.

During the visits, members were provided with a video and a technical presentation on nuclear power basics and approach to nuclear safety at the Daya Bay site, and tours of the exhibition centre which is fitted with a scaled model of the reactor and the nuclear steam supply system, a full scale replica of a fuel assembly and a model of the indigenous Generation III design Hualong 1, the full scope simulators of GNPS and LNPS 2 with the latter one installed with digital control technology, the full scale reactor refuelling training facility, and the viewing platforms of GNPS and LNPS.

The participants expressed much interest in nuclear operation at Daya Bay and there were much sharing during the visit.  The visit offered a useful opportunity to address the interest and further the understanding of the participants in nuclear power in China and particularly in Daya Bay.
