I am deeply honoured to have been elected as the Chairman of the NE Division for Session 2024/2025. I am eager to work with you all to advance our shared goals.
To enhance communication, we have launched our first-ever LinkedIn Page (https://www.linkedin.com/company/hkie-nuclear-division/). Please follow us there! We will use this channel and our Divisional homepage for updates.
One of our primary objectives moving forward is to recruit new members for the newly established Nuclear Discipline. We will enhance our outreach and hold seminars explaining the Founding Membership route, with applications open from April 2024 to September 2025.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities will be key. We will organise CPD events, including seminars, site visits, workshops, and conferences, to keep our members updated and foster collaborations.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, a cornerstone of China’s nuclear power industry since 1994. Its success has paved the way for further nuclear developments in China. The expansion of nuclear power in China and other regions presents significant opportunities. With fusion technology gaining momentum, we are nearing a new era of clean energy. Despite challenges, a commercial fusion plant is anticipated by the second half of the century.
Our Division will engage with these developments and keep our members informed. China augmented its nuclear power by 34 GW in the past decade, with 55 reactors and 53.2 GW capacity as of April 2024, and 23 more under construction. The US possesses 94 reactors but then it took nearly 40 years to match China’s recent growth. In 2022, nuclear power accounted for about 5% of China’s power generation and 18% of the US’s. We expect continued global growth in nuclear power for clean energy.
We are excited to collaborate with the medical physics community to create new synergies between our fields, opening new avenues for innovation and professional growth.
Together, we will navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead. I look forward to working with all of you to make the NE Division a beacon of excellence and innovation.
