The history of the HKIE Nuclear Division dates back to 1985 when the Division was originally formed as an Engineering Group of HKIE. It was at a time when the people of Hong Kong expressed their concern at the construction of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station after the Chernobyl nuclear accident which occurred on 26 April 1986. At that time, the Institution had lived up to its expectations to advise the Government and the public on the engineering issues related to the nuclear power station.
As the founding chairman of the Nuclear Engineering Group, Ir K.W. Tong masterminded the formation of the Nuclear Division during the initial turbulent years dated back to 1985-88. Following an amendment to the HKIE Constitution at a Special General Meeting in June 1987, the Nuclear Division was formally established with effect from January 1988. The primary goal of the Nuclear Division is to promote the exchange of information and ideas on nuclear engineering. The Division's first Annual General Meeting was held in April 1988 and the Division has since developed rapidly with the number of members now reaching almost 300.
Every year, the Division organizes a variety of activities for its members with a view to enhancing their knowledge and understanding on nuclear technology. These include technical presentations by prominent academic experts and nuclear specialists from around the world. Besides, the Division organized quality technical visits to its counterparts and the nuclear facilities in the Mainland and Taiwan in the past years, which were well received by the members. Technical visits to the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, in particular, had received overwhelming support by our members over the years. The Division Committee also committed to maintain the established contacts with the nuclear institutions in the Mainland and overseas for promoting our relationship with the nuclear institutions through technical exchange.
The highlight of major activities in recent years include the technical visit to Nuclear & Energy Facilities in Sichuan on 2-8 April 2003, the “2005 Asia Pacific Conference on Risk Management and Safety” which was co-organized with HKARMS on 1-2 December 2005 in Hong Kong, the World Nuclear Fuel Cycle 2006 conference organised by the World Nuclear Association and Nuclear Energy Institute for the first time in Hong Kong on 4-6 April 2006, and also the technical visit to the Qinshan Nuclear Power Station and nuclear institutions in Shanghai on 17-20 May 2006. Lastly, the Nuclear Division celebrated its 20th Anniversary by hosting a Forum on "Development of Nuclear Technology and Establishment of HKIE Nuclear Division" after the 20th Annual General Meeting, which was successfully held on 27 April 2007 at Staff Club Cafe & Restaurant of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with enthusiastic response from the honourable guests and members.
